We have begun the process of trying to reuse our farm waste and use it as a source of additional farm income. In the course of this series we shall take you through our entire process from set up to harvest. Highlighting the planning, setup, down to giving a rundown of inputs, and profitability of each business at harvest.
According to European Initiative for Sustainable Development in Agriculture (EISA) Integrated Farming is a whole farm management system, which enables the farmers to identify opportunities and threats and act accordingly, and, at the same time, consider consumer interests in their business. Integrated Farming is not based on a set of fixed parameters but on informed management processes. This knowledge-based flexibility of Integrated Farming includes attention to detail and managing all resources available.
What we are trying to achieve is a very simple form of integration between Fish and Vegetable farming.
For a fish farm, the major waste is the water that is discharged with every water change, what we are trying to do is make use of the available waste water which is a good fertilizer, and utilize it for the growth of vegetables.
Over the course of the upcoming weeks we shall work together in selecting the vegetables to be grown, the system to be used and in the creation of a workable plan.
